Silver is used extensively in brazing and soldering, where
when added to other materials increases the compound's
overall smoothness, thermal resistance and strength. Silver
based alloys are used in numerous applications and industrial
settings, such as for circuit boards on all types of computer
or electronic devices, in larger electric distribution
systems, in plumbing, in appliance manufacturing, and in
the electrical systems of automobiles, truck and
planes.
Because of the wide use of silver in soldering and brazing
throughout industry, a significant amount of yearly production
is used in this manner. Approximately 50 million ounces
in 2007 were used, or about 8% of total worldwide production.
