Photography has been around since the early to mid 1800's
and the use of silver based film has grown steadily over
time since then, with the exception of the last few years
and the introduction of digital cameras.
Classical photography is based on film covered with
silver halide crystals which set when exposed to light.
Over time it has proved to be the superior method of photographic
record due to its superior definition and stability.
X-rays are another use of silver based film, both in the
medical field and in industrial inspections, where the
integrity of cast metal is routinely tested. Heavy machinery
parts are scanned to display hidden flaws within
the metal which can only be revealed on an X-ray.
In 2007, demand from photography accounted for the usage
of approximately 120 million ounces, or about 12 - 15%
of production from the year. This off take has been steadily
declining due to the introduction of digital photography.
Demand in 2007 was roughly half of demand 10 years ago,
but it is still a significant factor in the industry.
