RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Devices)

Radio Frequency Identification Devices (along with Superconductivity) is one of two promising frontiers of silver usage. The invention and use of RFID's is an inventory management technology similar to the role of barcodes. They are small tags using a few milligrams of silver as part of their passive electric signal which can be scanned from a distance with multiple readings taken all at once.

For any inventory or tracking management situation, such as warehousing, libraries, shipping and mail, factory lines, and passports to name a few of potential applications, RFID's promise to offer a new level of control, ease and efficiency into any logistical environment. They can be re-used but not recycled, withstand wear or exposure and offer indirect scanning without necessary eye or hand contact.

If RFID's become widely a widely adopted technology, they would need to be manufactured by the millions, which is the significance to the silver market and the potential demand. For a full discussion of RFID's, The Silver Book - Fortis.
